Editorial Services

I edit poetry, fiction, and scholarly materials. I specialize in developmental editing, but also enjoy line editing and copyediting. Need more info? See my booklet, Levels of Editing.

Looking for a cost estimate? Send me an email with the word count and subject matter. For poetry, send me the number of poems and the page count. Each project has unique challenges and features that generic quoting by page or by word count cannot accommodate.

  • Manuscript Evaluations:

Manuscript Evaluations include a detailed report on relevant aspects of your manuscript (structure, argument, relevant narrative elements, strengths, weaknesses, aspects of narrative structure, narrative elements, etc.), as well as a 30-minute post-evaluation debrief.

    Structural/Stylistic Editing:

Structural editing is assessing and shaping material to improve its organization and content.

    Book Doctoring

Let’s call it CrossFit for copyeditors: It’s a series of varied, high-intensity functional editing moves designed to turn fictional flab into literary lean. Book doctoring looks for big-picture issues that need addressing (development, structure, organization, flow). In the role of book doctor, I can assist you in reworking key sections of your book, while maintaining your voice and style. I do not rewrite the whole book—that’s ghostwriting, and I do not do that.

  • Line Editing

Line editing is editing to clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow, and refine language.

    Copy Editing

Copy editing is editing to ensure correctness, accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

    Bibliographies and Reference Materials

I specialize in editing and proofreading reference materials (in-text citations, footnotes, endnotes, and references). I am familiar with APA, MLA, and CMOS, and several scientific styles.

  • Proofreading

Proofreading is examining material after layout or in its final format to correct errors in textual and visual elements.

    Preparing for Submission

Every publisher, journal, or magazine has its own preferences on how to submit, how to structure a pitch letter, and how to prepare a submission package. I can assist you with making a good first impression—from drafting a pitch letter to finding a suitable publisher for your work.

    NOTE: I cannot guarantee publication.

  • I offer a limited number of personalized coaching opportunities every year.

Coaching is a good option for anyone who hasn’t written a book before, and needs expert assistance along the way. If you would like more information on coaching or mentoring, please download my free brochure.

“Peter’s copy-edits are excellent . . . many of his comments in the manuscript were questions my argument raised for him . . . perceptive in ways that I’ve never encountered from a copy-editor.”
